Caorle and Excursions

Historic Center of Caorle

Caorle, once known as Caprulae, is a town of ancient origin which has transitioned from a small fishing town to a splendid tourist resort with state-of-the-art facilities. Despite its transformation, it has maintained its unique spirit and sense of tradition. As a matter of fact, Caorle's historic Venetian-style town centre is a true gem awaiting to be explored. Whilst wandering along the calli (narrow streets) and campielli (small quaint squares), you're bound to stumble across fishermen busy tending to their fishing nets.

Caorle Lagoon

One of the most beautiful excursions is to the Caorle lagoon. The lagoon is accessible by motorboat along the wide canals or by bicycle, and here it is possible to see the Casoni, traditional fishermen huts. The cason features a fireplace at the centre of the house and the floorboards are in brick or packed dirt. In order to build the houses, the fishermen used materials which could easily be retrieved from the area, such as common reeds. Some casoni are open to the public so visitors can experience the atmosphere of that time. The Caorle lagoon, which was dear to writer and 1954 literary Nobel prize winner Ernest Hemingway, is described in his book "Across the River and into the Trees".

Sanctuary of "Madonna dell'Angelo"

The Caorle coastline, split in two by the historic town centre, extends for 5 Km and is divided into the Levante beach (East Beach) and the Ponente beach (West Beach). On the Levante beach, you will find the Sanctuary of La Madonna dell' Angelo, almost suspended above the sea. Inside the church, you'll find the Virgin of the Angel, venerated by the Caorle fishermen and locals. According to the legend, the statue was seen floating in the sea on a marble base; fishermen collected it and place it in the sanctuary to protect them and the town locals.

Caorle beaches

Thanks to its transformation into a tourist town, Caorle can now offer its guests state-of-the-art facilities, well-equipped beaches (which have proudly waved the Blue Flag for several years now), babysitting services, aquagym and morning warm up courses, beach tennis and beach volley courts and, last but not least, a long cycling path that reaches the centre of Caorle and the nearby towns of Brian, Porto Santa Margherita, Duna Verde and, for the fittest cyclists, Brussa (30 Km away), which offers a natural oasis and features an uncontaminated free access beach, a pine grove and several trails that extend into the Caorle lagoon. Caorle is also the perfect destination for bird-watching enthusiasts as many bird species build their nests here every year; it is also possible to spot foxes and roe deer.
